Yohannes Haile, Canada

Dr. Yohannes Haile earned BSc in Biology from the University of Asmara, Eritrea; M.Sc. in Molecular Microbiology and Aquatic Ecology from the Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology/ISATEC, University of Bremen, Germany; PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover/Hannover Medical School, Germany; after which he moved to Canada and pursued postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroinflammation/ Neuroimmunology and Cell Biology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton-Canada. Following the postdoctoral fellowship, Yohannes continued working in capacities of research scientist at the University of Alberta, and a sessional lecturer of Human Anatomy at the King’s University in Edmonton, Canada. In the mid of 2017, Dr. Haile joined Health Canada where he is currently a senior scientific evaluator (regulatory scientist) in the Centre for Oncology, Radiopharmaceuticals and Research (CORR). Yohannes assesses biologics-derived therapies including cell and gene therapy products, and leads the Science and Regulatory Preparedness working group, which is a Health Canada wide initiative. In addition, Yohannes represents Health Canada in the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) as a member of subcommittee on Lymphohematopoietic Cells Standards. Moreover, Dr. Haile is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University in Ottawa. He published his research findings in the Journals of Neuroinflammation, Immunology, Leukocyte Biology, Neuroimmunology, Frontiers in Immunology, Biomaterials etc. He delivered guest lectures and invited presentations in many national and international events, Universities, and institutes. Dr. Haile received several prestigious awards including the 2021 Health Canada Awards of Excellence in recognition to the contribution to the improvement of the Health of Canadians; and the Med Star Postdoctoral Fellow Award from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, and the Alberta Health Services.
